No one came, the REAL terrorists, and just another lone gunman [Shorter Question Everything]

Won’t investigate. Okay, well we won’t press charges. Well, we have to press charges or look like the enormous racist douchebags that we are but we’re sure not going to have the murderer face anything more than a slap on the wrist for it. Just as long as it LOOKS like we did something. I could be talking about the Trayvon Martin shooting, or the (now) murder of an Iraqi woman in California, or the mass murder of Afghans by Staff Sgt Bales. Nothing ever changes.

Stand Your Ground’s Moving Goalposts: Well, it’s certainly nice to hear that the Republican presidential candidates don’t think that Stand Your Ground covers following someone and then shooting them to death as they beg for their life, but I think they’re not so much condemning George Zimmerman and the Sanford PD (both of which richly deserve it) as desperately trying to defend this horrible law. The Bystander Effect: [W]hen I heard the screams for help of Trayvon Martin on the 911 calls of George Zimmerman’s neighbors, it hit me like a gut punch that not one of those people answered those screams for help. Sure, they called 911, but there was a boy out there, being threatened by a man ten years older and 100 pounds heavier–a stranger. And he did what we tell our children to do. And no one came. Trayvon Martin family attorney confident state charges coming in shooting death: An attorney for the family of Trayvon Martin said Saturday he expects that state charges will be filed against the neighborhood watch volunteer who shot dead the unarmed black teenager. Attorney Daryl Parks, in an interview by Skype with the board of the National Association of Black Journalists, said the family and its attorneys met Thursday with officials from the U.S. Justice Department. “I think the focus is not a federal arrest over a state arrest,” Parks said told the journalists. “We want an arrest, period. And I think that the state aspect of that is the one that’s most feasible, that’s most attainable in this matter.” [NBC News, msnbc.com staff and news services/24 mar 2012]

Beaten Iraqi woman ‘dies in California’: An Iraqi woman brutally beaten in her southern California home in an apparently racially-motivated attack has died in hospital, US media reported. Shaima Alawadi, 32 and a mother of five, died after she had been taken off life support Saturday at a hospital in San Diego County, CNN television reported. Alawadi had been on life support since Wednesday when her teenage daughter found her unconscious in the living room of their home, the report said. “During the initial stages of this investigation, a threatening note was discovered very close to where the victim was found,” police Lieutenant Mark Coit told the network. Alawadi’s daughter said the note told the family to go back to Iraq and called them “terrorists,” CNN noted. [AFP/25 mar 2012]

Just another lone gunman myth: American officials say U.S. investigators now believe the U.S. soldier accused of killing 17 Afghan civilians split the slaughter into two episodes – returning to his base after the first attack and later slipping away to kill again. This scenario seems to support the U.S. government’s assertion — contested by some Afghans — that the killings were done by one person, since they would have been perpetrated over a longer period of time than assumed when Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales was detained March 11. But it also raises questions about how Bales, who was formally charged with premeditated murder, could have carried out the slaughter without drawing attention from others on the American base in Kandahar province.[AP/25 mar 2012]

Palestinians Lose Water Access as Israelis Take Over Springs: Palestinians are losing access to water sources in the West Bank as Israeli settlers take over springs. The settlers use threats, intimidation and fences to ensure control of water sources near the settlements, finds a new United Nations survey released today. Thirty of the springs were found to be under full settler control, with no Palestinian access to the area, according to the assessment carried by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs over the course of the past year. Mali coup leaders face growing criticism: BAMAKO, Mali — Mali’s military coup leaders face growing international criticism after overthrowing the county’s elected president and arresting his ministers, observers said. The African Union temporarily suspended Mali, while regional leaders planned an emergency meeting next week in Ivory Coast to discuss the situation, The New York Times reported. Meanwhile, the World Bank suspended funds, the European Union cut off some aid and the United States threatened [emph mine] to cut aid, while China condemned the coup. [UPI/24 mar 2012]
